Dreams change? In this case to nightmares

I heard our President speaking yesterday to the NAACP. During his speech, he said his goal was for every American to be given the opportunity to have the American dream. He defined the American dream as having affordable health care, being provided affordable college, and a job, among other things. Note the word "provided."

The American dream isn't that everyone has two cars plus one "fun car", owns a 2000 square foot house, makes $60+ a year, earns a Bachelor's degree, has a 40" (or bigger) plat panel HDTV, has a brand new bedroom and living room set, takes extravagant vacations each year and provides a cell phone for everyone in the family over the age of 10.

A dream like that is called Materialism. And that ain't a dream, it's voluntary slavery.
And to quote John Foreman "That ain't my American dream."

So, seriously, how do you define the American dream?
Can you get that dream without borrowing money?
Is your American dream based on happiness derived from amassing stuff for yourself or your children?
